Chef Jay Rommelfanger visited the kitchen of the Berne Union Schools cafeteria May 5 and 6 to prepare special entrees for student lunches. Rommelfanger, who lives in Oskosh, Wis., creates recipes and prepares food for Taher Foods, the company that provides food service for the school.

The fastest-growing name in the restaurant business isn't Chipotle or Dunkin' Donuts. It's Taher Inc. The Minnetonka-based school and corporate food-service giant got into restaurants last year with the Wayzata Eatery and the Alaskan Eatery. Students at all levels are eating Indian curry, Thai noodles and fish tacos and asking for more. In fact, they also are reaching for fresh vegetables, fruits and other healthy items. Not that pizza and corn dogs are off the menu -- these are kids, after all -- but a program that offers international-type dishes with an emphasis on healthy eating is making a difference.

Taher Inc. is now adding restaurants to their portfolio. They opened recently the Wayzata Eatery in Wayzata, Minn., and, in September, plan to open the Alaska Eatery in nearby St. Louis Park.
